Saint Dominic lived in the early 13th century and founded the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church. This portrait shows a dog at his side holding a torch in his mouth, with the torch's lit end casting a faint light behind the saint. This portrait by Zurbarán, a major 17th century Spanish painter, is thought to have been painted for the Convent of San Pablo el Real in Seville, when he was around 27 years old. Strips of canvas were later added to the right, left and bottom of the composition. The image of a figure quietly emerging from the black lacquer-like background and the painting's contemplative mood convey the essence of Zurbarán's style that led to his "painter of monks" nickname.
