Bartolomeo Manfredi

Ostiano, 1582 - Rome, 1622

The Capture of Christ

Date c. 1613-15
Materials and Techniques Oil on canvas
Size(cm) 120 x 174
Category Paintings
Collection Number P.2015-0001

The Italian Bartolomeo Manfredi played a leading role in transmitting Caravaggio's painting to the younger generation of artists in Rome in the 1610s. This painting depicts the scene in which Judas, having betrayed Christ, identifies him to his captors with a kiss. The work, in fact, reproduces a composition by Caravaggio (now held in Dublin) but with the figures reversed. Their somber, melancholic expression is entirely characteristic of Manfredi.
