Pierrot and clowns constituted Rouault's primary themes from the establishment of his painting style until the end of his life. The depiction of clowns was a clear representation of the true character of humanity and was an act of symbolic and religious import for Rouault. The strong sense of composition born from Rouault's distinctive method of thickly layered pigment reveals the artist's earnest approach to this subject. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
