Many of van Dongen's works in the 1920s feature images of fashionable society, street scenes and women wearing stylish clothes. Hall of Casino is an example of these works. The features of this period in his works include figures elongated into attenuated forms and a palette that is lighter and softer than the palette of his works before World War Ⅰ. The extreme difference in size between the figures in the background and those in the foreground, the high vantage point, and the attention spent on the clothing details, rather than on the facial features, all make the work a decidedly decorative piece. Another oil painting of the same period, Woman in Turban, is in the NMWA's Matsukata collection. (Source: Masterpieces of the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, 2009, cat. no.111)
