Lebourg first studied architecture but then turned to painting after he was strongly influenced by his first sight of an exhibition of Courbet's works in Paris. He taught design for five years in Algiers in North Africa beginning in 1872 and received wide support as an Impressionist painter upon his return to Paris. He liked to paint scenes of the great rivers, ocean and sky, and this work is a fascinating example of an academic style created with Impressionist methods. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
