Since ancient times, cariatide has been a term for female figures that serve as columns. From around 1909, Modigliani made a number of rough sketches of cariatides, which are thought to be studies for sculptures. Here, the human form is given strong expression through Modigliani's chracteristic abstract, curved lines. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
