In the collection of, and probably commissioned by, Don Francisco de Benavides Dávila y Corella, IX Count of Santisteban (1640–1716); recorded in the inventory drawn up on 5 and 7 October 1697 following the death of his wife, Dña Francisca de Aragón y Sandoval, Countess of Santisteban: ‘Adoración de los Magos’; and also recorded in his posthumous inventory dated 29 August 1716, under nos. 30–35: ‘adoración de los Reyes, de mano de Jordán’; by descent to his son, Don Manuel de Benavides y Aragón, 1st Duke of Santisteban del Puerto (1683–1748); recorded in his posthumous inventory of 1750; possibly by descent to Don António de Benavides y de La Cueva, 2nd Duke of Santisteban del Puerto (1714–1782); possibly by inheritance to Dña Joaquina del Milagro, Duchess of Santisteban del Puerto (1746–1805), wife of Don Luis María de la Soledad Fernández de Córdoba, 13th Duke of Medinaceli (1749–1806); possibly by descent to Luis Joaquin Fernández de Córdoba y Benavides, 14th Duke of Medinaceli (1780–1840); possibly by descent to Luis Tomás de Villanueva Fernández de Córdoba, 15th Duke of Medinaceli (1813–1873); in the collection of Don Joaquin Payá, Madrid (d. 1964/5), by whom believed to have been acquired from a member of the Medinaceli family by around 1930; by descent to his grandson; Acquired privately through Sotheby’s by the Jonathan Ruffer Collection in 2016, and on loan to The Auckland Project since 2016 and exhibited at The Spanish Gallery, Bishop Auckland, UK; purchased by NMWA through James MacDonald Fine Art, 31 July 2025.
