ローラ・ナイトは20世紀前半のイギリスで最も評価された女性画家のひとり。1929年にはデイムの称号受章。1936年に女性初のRA正会員。第一次世界大戦下の1916年、ナイトは批評家コノディを通してカナダの実業家マックス・エイトケンの注文を受け、カナダ兵士たちを描くため、ロンドン南西に位置するカナダ軍のキャンプ・ウィットレイへ派遣される。ここでバンダム級チャンピオンのボクサー、ジョー・シアーズと知り合うチャンスを得た彼女は、トレーニング中のシアーズをモデルに大量のスケッチを描いた。男性の、しかも運動している姿を大量にスケッチできたことは特に女性画家にとっては貴重な経験であり、「私はジョーに多くの恩義がある」とのちに画家は回想している。(1) 本作品はそうした中で生まれた作品のひとつであり、1918年2月のレスター画廊の「ローラ・ナイトによる『軍隊生活』とその他の絵」展に出品され（15番）、松方は他の作品3点（M614-M616）とともに購入している。 (1) L. (copy in NMWA curatorial file)]; pledged by Matsukata to save his business, Kawasaki Dockyard, Co., Ltd., Kobe and then seized by Jugo Bank, Tokyo, 1927 [Jugo Bank label on the reverse]; private collection, Japan; deposited in NMWA, 15 January 2016, ref. no. 84; purchased by NMWA, 2017.
