これは、カッソーネと呼ばれる西洋長持の前面を飾っていた絵画です。カッソーネは14-16世紀のイタリアで好まれ、典型的には花嫁の嫁入り道具のひとつとして作られました。旧約聖書に登場するヘブライ人の人妻スザンナの生涯を表す本作は、当初もう1点の絵画と対になってふたつのカッソーネを飾っていたと考えられます。本作はスザンナ伝の後半に当たります。長老たちから言い寄られ不倫の濡れ衣を着せられた彼女は、法廷で自らの無実を証明し、嘘をついた長老たちは連行され石打ちの刑に処されています。貞操という美徳を具現したスザンナの生涯は、結婚を機に作られるカッソーネを飾る絵画の主題としてよく好まれました。本作を描いたスケッジャは画家マサッチョの弟で、15世紀中葉のフィレンツェにおけるこうした装飾画の第一人者です。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）
