ナビ派の画家セリュジエは、1888年にゴーガンを訪ねて初めてブルターニュ地方に赴き、その後もくり返し滞在しては同地の日常生活に取材した作品を多く残しました。 本作も、ブルターニュ特有の衣服やコアフ（頭飾り）を身に着けた女性たちが水辺に集う様子を描いています。しかし目を惹くのは、草木の緑や岩肌の青みと、川面の赤色や地面の黄土色とのあいだの強い対比です。非自然主義的な色彩の選択や、太い輪郭線で囲まれた平坦な色面、形体の単純化といった表現には、ゴーガンが実践していた「クロワゾニスム」と呼ばれる様式の残響が認められます。こうした再現性よりも観念的な造形を追い求める態度は、目に映るままに自然を描こうとした印象派への挑戦でもありました。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）
