ブラックは1908年から1914年までの間、同世代の友人であるピカソとの密接な交流を通じて、キュビスムと呼ばれる新しい絵画様式を追及しました。彼らは、ひとつの固定された視点から空間を見る遠近法的表現を捨てて、いくつもの視点から見た形を組み合わせることによって物の存在感を表そうと試みました。しかし、その試みが進むにつれて、画面の中心にある物の形が周りの空間と複雑に結びつけられるようになり、彼らの作品は西洋絵画の伝統的な方法とはまったく異なる手法で現実を再構成するものとなりました。 キュビスムは「手で触ることのできる空間」の追及から生まれたとブラックが後に語ったように、彼のキュビスム絵画の多くは、間近から見たテーブルの上の静物を描いています。この作品では、テーブルの天板、瓶、果物などの形が四角い面や曲線によって分割され、茶色と灰色で統一された画面の中でなかば解体されながらも、かろうじて現実の痕跡をとどめています。絵画と現実との関係を問い直したキュビスムは、20世紀美術の展開にきわめて大きな影響を及ぼしました。
