ピエトロ・ロンギこと、本名ピエトロ・ファルカは、ヴェネツィアの18世紀という、あまり刺激的ではない世界での生活の一場面を主に描いた画家である。中央の女性の姿は、当時流行していた「虱取り」のポーズからヒントを得ている。「虱取り」のイメージとこの若い女性の仕草を重ね合わせながら、何をしているのかと疑問をもつ我々は、実は画中の紳士と同じ視線をたどってしまう。そうした行儀の悪さを、女中がたしなめてくれる。ロンギは、老若男女、身分の貴賤を問わず、彼はいつも人間に優しい眼差しを向けている。ロンギの作品は、我々の目の前に、自然な態度で18世紀ヴェネツィアの世界を見せてくれる。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

Pietro Longhi (born Pietro Falca) specialized mainly in pictures of everyday scenes of the rather unstimulating life of 18th century Venice. The way the woman at the centre is posing was inspired by the "louse picking" posture, which was in vogue in those days. While overlapping the image of "picking lice" and this young woman's pose, we cannot help wondering what she is up to and consequently end up glancing in the same manner as the gentlemen in the picture. The maid reproves us for such bad manners. Irrespective of age, sex, or class, Longhi always regarded the humans in a tender manner. Longhi's works show us the 18th century Venetian world in a natural way. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
