ピエロや道化師は、1902年頃に自らの画風を確立したルオーが生涯描き続けた主題である。ルオーにとって道化師を描くということは、人間の本性を明らかにするという、多少とも象徴的、宗教的な意味を帯びた行為であった。独特の厚塗りの技法から生まれるがっしりとした構築性に、画家のこの主題との真剣な取り組みが窺われる。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

Pierrot and clowns constituted Rouault's primary themes from the establishment of his painting style until the end of his life. The depiction of clowns was a clear representation of the true character of humanity and was an act of symbolic and religious import for Rouault.
