本作品は、パリ・コミューンに関わって投獄されたクールベが、スイス亡命直前に故郷オルナンを描いたものである。狩猟画はクールベの得意のジャンルの一つであった。陽光を受けた岩山を背景に、2匹の愛らしい鹿とこれを物陰で窺う漁師との間の緊張感が、みずみずしい情感に溢れた自然描写と一体となって描かれている。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

This canvas was painted by Courbet in his hometown of Ornans immediately before his exile to Switzerland after his imprisonment for his activities with the Paris Commune. Paintings of hunters were one of Courbet's distinctive genres. Against a background of light struck cliffs, this tense scene of a hidden hunter watching two engaging deer is represented with fresh sensitivity and naturalism.
