マニャスコはイタリアのジェノヴァに生まれ主にミラノで活躍した、極めて独創的な画家です。暗くも豊かな色調を持つ色彩、捻じ曲げられ、半ば陰に沈む細長い人物たちといった、幻想的で表現主義的な特徴は、この画家に典型的なものです。この2点の風景画[もう1点は《羊飼いのいる風景》(P.1974-0006)を指す]は、現実の風景を写実的に表したものではありません。17世紀のバロック的伝統を踏まえた教訓的理想の風景画であり、強調されるのは壮大な自然の美と威力に対する人間の技の卑小さと生のはかなさです。近年の研究では、こうした風景画においてマニャスコは人物像のみを描き、自然風景はアントニオ・フランチェスコ・ペルッツィーニ（1643/46-1724年）という画家が描いたとする見解が提示されています。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）

This pair of large landscapes was created during Magnasco's most prosperous years, his second Milanese period of 1718-1725. The dark, but rich color palette, swirling brush strokes, and tall and slender figures crouching half hidden in shadows all contribute to the extremely dramatic, illusionary feel of Magnasco's painted world. Here Magnasco shows the beauty and power of nature in juxtaposition with the small powerless existence of mankind, battling valiantly in the face of nature. The impressionist touch of his brush strokes continued in the works of such 18th century Venetian painters as Guardi.
