この作品はルノワール初期の代表作の一つです。ハーレム（イスラム文化圏における後宮）の官能的な女たちが描かれているように見えますが、ここはパリの一室です。当時、画家はイスラム文化に彩られた北アフリカを訪れてはいませんでしたが、ドラクロワの《アルジェの女たち》などを下敷きにして、きらびやかな衣服を纏ったパリの女たちのまわりに装飾豊かな絨毯や家具を配し、東方趣味を存分に表現しています。ルノワール特有の豊かな色彩と筆遣いがすでに見られます。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）

This is quintessential early Renoir. Although the painting purports to show a harem (the female quarters in a Muslim household), complete with alluring women, it is an imagined scene projected onto a room in Paris. Renoir had not yet visited North Africa and been directly exposed to Islamic culture, the painting’s Orientalism, expressed in the elaborately decorated carpet and furnishings and flamboyantly dressed Parisian models, follows such works as Delacroix’s Women of Algiers in their Apartment. The lush colors and brushwork we will come to associate with Renoir are already on display. (Source: Gallery label, October 2016)
