古典絵画から学んだ力強いデッサン力と甘美な色彩を結び付け、後にエコール・デ・ボザールの主任教授となったデスパニャは、アカデミズムの後継者として精力的に活動した。とくに若い女性を描いた装飾的な風俗画によって人気を博したが、本作品においても、画家特有の夢想的で甘美な情緒性とアカデミックな造形感覚が窺われる。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

D'Espagnat developed a strong sense of design from his study of classical paintings, and then created a style that combined this power with a gentle color palette. He later became the principal teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts and was an active successor to the Academic movement. He gained popularity for his decorative genre scenes depicting young women, and as can be seen in this work, combined a sweet, dream-like emotionalism with an academic sense of modeling.
