ギュスターヴ・モローに学んだデヴァリエールは、第一次世界大戦後にモーリス・ドニと「聖画塾」を設立し、宗教画の再興を試みました。本作にはルカ伝第一章の「訪問」場面という伝統への依拠とともに、新しい芸術感覚の息吹が見られます。ここでは聖母マリアによるエリザベト訪問が、画家の娘と母親の姿をかりて表され、左端で見守るエリザベトの夫ザカリヤには、父親の姿がかさねられています。さながら劇を観ているかのような印象を受けるのは、帯状の構図や、画面左の樹木のアーチが舞台装置を想わせるためでしょう。ありふれた情景に聖書の物語をかさね合わせ、日常生活に垣間みられるキリスト教の精神をとらえています。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）

Desvallières trained under Gustave Moreau and after the First World War, founded the "Ateliers d'Art Sacré" with Maurice Denis where they strove to revive religious painting in the modern world. This work depicts the Visitation from the first chapter of the Book of Luke. Even in the depiction of this traditional subject, the fresh colors and the figures clothed in contemporary dress seen on the left edge of the composition reveal a new artistic sensibility.
