1905年、ドニはフランクフルト近郊、ヴィースバーデンのミュッツェンベッカー男爵邸内の奏楽室のための装飾（現在は紛失）を手掛けた。《永遠の夏》と題されたこの装飾は、5枚の画面から成り、それぞれには、「オルガン」、「声楽」、「四重奏」、「舞踏」、「オラトリオ」の主題が描かれていた。当館所蔵の《踊る女たち》は、そのうちの「舞踏」のための習作またはレプリカと考えられる。古代風の白い衣に身を包み、花冠を被った乙女たちの背景に広がるのはフィレンツェ郊外のフィエーゾレの丘である。古代からルネッサンスに至る輝かしい歴史の遺産と美しい自然に恵まれた中部イタリアのこの土地をドニはとりわけ愛し、生涯を通じて何度も滞在している。ドニの生涯においては、装飾芸術に対する持続的な情熱を認めることができる。詩集の挿絵など、比較的手軽な方法を用いた1880-90年代に対して、中期以降にはさまざまな教会や邸館の装飾（1903年のル・ヴェジネのサント・マルグリット教区聖堂のための装飾、1911-12年のパリ、ワグラム邸のための装飾《黄金時代》など）を手掛け、その芸術はモニュメンタルな建築空間との融合をめざす方向に向かって行った。それらの大構図は必ずしも成功せず、しばしば色彩と構図の破綻を招いている。しかしながら、この作品に見られるような優しく親しみ深い情景の中に繰り広げられる西欧本来の人文的、古典的伝統を踏まえた世界は、まさしくドニ独自のものである。（出典: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2006. cat. no. 108）

In 1905, Denis worked on the now lost decorations for the music pavilion of Baron Mutzenbecker at Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt. The decorative cycle was entitled "Eternal Summer" and consisted of five paintings, Organ, Vocal Music, Instrumental Quartet, Dance, and Oratory. Girls Dancing is thought to represent a study work for, or a replica, Dance. The hills of Fiesole near Florence rise behind young virgins dressed in the white robes of antiquity and crowned with flowers. Denis loved the land of central Italy with its natural beauty and artistic heritage stretching from antiquity to the Renaissance, and he lived in the region during several periods of his life. Denis exhibited an enduring enthusiasm for decorative arts throughout his life. From the relatively simple techniques employed for such projects as illustrations for poetry anthologies during the 1880s and 1890s , Denis turned to the creation of art for monumental architectural spaces such as churches and mansions, including the decoration for the Church of Sainte Marguerite at Le Vésinet in 1901-03 and the "Golden Age" decoration of the residence of the Prince of Wagram in Paris in 1911-12. He was not always successful at these large-scale projects which gradually led to a ruined palette and form. However, as can be seen in this work, Denis was adept at the depiction of the world of western Europe's original classical and humanist traditions spread out amidst a superbly familiar landscape.
