印象派の画家たちが、外光の輝きに酔って明るい画面の描出に努めていた時、コッテらはブル夕一ニュの片田舎に閉じこもって、農夫や漁民たちの暗い忍従に満ちた生活を、激しい感情表現をこめて、リアリスティックに描いた。そのため彼らは「黒の一団（バンド・ノワール）」とさえ名付けられもした。このグループは、同じようにブルターニュの一角、ポンタヴェンに陣どり、忘れられた半島の神秘的かつピトレスクな風俗に眼を向けていたゴーガンを盟主とするポンタヴェン派の画家たちとも接触するものの、当然のことながら、その関心の赴くところは全く異なっていた。本作品は、このようなコッテの一面をよく伝えており、聖母子像を担って行進するプルガステル村の娘たちの表情は暗く、深く黙想しているかのようである。ここにはミレーの作品、またゴッホのヌエネン時代の作品に共通するような、写実と感情的昂揚が一体化した特異な雰囲気が感じとられる。（出典: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2006. cat. no. 97）

A distinctive culture and lifestyle has long flourished in the region of Brittany along the French coast of the English Channel. Cottet first visited the region in 1892, and it is apparent that the region's scenery and lifestyle had a decisive impact on his painting style. He later traveled into rural areas of Brittany where he depicted the melancholic emotions of the resigned lives of farmers and peasants through a dark palette. This work ably conveys one aspect of Cottet's style. Here he depicts the dark, deeply meditative expressions of a procession of young girls who carry a statue of the Virgin and Child on their shoulders. Cottet's works resemble those of Millet and early van Gogh in their expression of a special sensibility that unifies realism with heightened emotions.
