ネヴィルソンは第一次世界大戦におけるイギリスの最もよく知られる戦争画家のひとり。スレード美術学校で学んだ後、パリでキュビストや未来派のマリネッティらと交流。1916年に赤十字や医療団に参加した後、1917年に公式戦争画家に任命された。その年の夏に西部戦線に配属された後、戦争宣伝局が指揮する版画連作『大戦 英国の努力と理想』に参加、航空機の製造を未来派風のスタイルで描いた6点を制作する。松方コレクションにはファイン・アート・ソサエティで購入されたこの6点のほか（M2628-M2633）、1918年3月にレスター画廊から購入された油彩1点（M831）、素描2点（M1709, M1710）、版画2点（M2634, M2635）、計11点のネヴィンソンの作品があった。遠く戦闘機が飛ぶ空の下、戦火で焼け尽くされた大地を描いた本作品に漂う静けさは、破壊され尽くし、痛々しい痛いが散らばる戦場を負傷者や捕虜たちを連れて黙々と歩む兵士たちの姿を描いた1919年制作の大作《戦の収穫》（帝国戦争博物館、ロンドン）を思わせる。（出典: 国立西洋美術館開館60周年記念 松方コレクション展. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2019. cat. no. 67）
