『パリのおのぼりさん』：（16）ダゲレオタイプの肖像写真「さあ、これぞ太陽が生んだ傑作・・・、どうです、この色つやは、ふむ？・・・この温もりは・・・これがみんな3秒間のできごとなんですぞ！」「ま、そりゃそうだけど・・・、これじゃわたしが3秒しかお天道さまに照らされなかったとはとうてい思えないよ・・・。なんだか3年くらい日干しになってたみたいだな。だってほんとの黒人みたいにみえるじゃないか・・・。ま、いいや。これはこれでなかなかいい肖像だよ、かみさんもさぞ喜ぶだろう！・・・」 <Strangers in Paris>: (16) The Daguerreotype portrait: — Here is the work of the sun..., how coloured it is, hm?... how warm... and all in three seconds! — Well, true...looking at that, you wouldn 't say that I 'd been in the sun for only three seconds... you 'd think I 'd been in it for three years, because I look like a real negro... never mind, it 's a pretty portrait, and my wife will be well pleased!...
