前半4点は、人間が死すべき存在となった原因であるアダムとエヴァの堕罪を物語る。すなわち、神は、アダムの伴侶とすべく彼のあばら骨からエヴァを創造するが（《エヴァの創造》G.2000-0042）、彼女は蛇の誘いに乗って禁断の果実を口にし、さらにアダムにも食べさせてしまう（《堕罪》G.2000-0043）。罪に堕ちた2人は楽園から追放され（《楽園追放》G.2000-0044）、労働の苦しみを背負うこととなった（《大地を耕すアダムとエヴァ》G.2000-0045）。後半4枚は「死」に連れ去られる人々を表すが、登場人物は、みなカトリックの聖職者たちである。教皇は、自らが神になったかのごとく、ひざまずいた王に足に接吻させつつ戴冠しており（《死と教皇》G.2000-0046）、枢機卿は信者に免罪符を売りつけようとしている（《死と枢機卿》G.2000-0047）。小羊＝信者たちの間から連れ去られる司教は豪奢な法衣をまとい（《死と司教》G.2000-0048）、禁欲生活を送るべき修道院長はでっぷりと太っている（《死と修道院長》G.2000-0049）。つまり、この連作において、アルデグレーファーは、プロテスタント側に立ってカトリック教会への鋭い批判を表明したのである。(出典: クラインマイスター：16世紀前半ドイツにおける小画面の版画家たち, 2012.
