ホガースは近代英国絵画の創始者。主に版画で活躍。17世紀オランダ風俗画の伝統を継承しつつも、登場人物の視線を交錯させたり、顔の表情に劇的効果を与えることによって画面に生気をもたらし、勤勉を尊ぶ資本主義勃興期の市民階級の倫理観に根ざした、新しい風俗画を確立した。 「放蕩一代」は、主人公トム・レイクウェル（レイクとは放蕩者の意味）が、父の遺産を相続してから放蕩の末に狂人として精神病院に収容されるまでを綴った年代記である。 第8図は「放蕩一代」の最後の一葉。トムはついに発狂してベトラム精神病院に収容される。彼を看護するのはサラ。その周りには様々なタイプの患者が描かれている。廊下では着飾った二人の若い女が、裸で放尿している王様気取りの患者を盗み見ている。当時ベトラム精神病院の見学はロンドン市民の娯楽の一つであった。（出典: 平成6年度新収作品 [配布資料]. 国立西洋美術館, 1995. より一部引用）
