ホガースは近代英国絵画の創始者。主に版画で活躍。17世紀オランダ風俗画の伝統を継承しつつも、登場人物の視線を交錯させたり、顔の表情に劇的効果を与えることによって画面に生気をもたらし、勤勉を尊ぶ資本主義勃興期の市民階級の倫理観に根ざした、新しい風俗画を確立した。 「放蕩一代」は、主人公トム・レイクウェル（レイクとは放蕩者の意味）が、父の遺産を相続してから放蕩の末に狂人として精神病院に収容されるまでを綴った年代記である。 第3図は、居酒屋「ザ・ローズ亭」で娼婦たちと乱痴気騒ぎを繰り広げるトム。剣が鞘から抜け、足もとには警棒とカンテラが落ちていることから、夜警とけんかをしてきたものと想像される。娼婦は酔っぱらったトムからこっそり時計を盗んで仲間に渡している。戸口では身重の乞食娘が「ブラック・ジョーク」なる歌をうたっている。（出典: 平成6年度新収作品 [配布資料]. 国立西洋美術館, 1995. より一部引用）
