ホガースは近代英国絵画の創始者。主に版画で活躍。17世紀オランダ風俗画の伝統を継承しつつも、登場人物の視線を交錯させたり、顔の表情に劇的効果を与えることによって画面に生気をもたらし、勤勉を尊ぶ資本主義勃興期の市民階級の倫理観に根ざした、新しい風俗画を確立した。 「放蕩一代」は、主人公トム・レイクウェル（レイクとは放蕩者の意味）が、父の遺産を相続してから放蕩の末に狂人として精神病院に収容されるまでを綴った年代記である。 第１図は、トムが高利貸しであった父の遺産を相続する場面。彼は仕立て屋に喪服の寸法をとらせる一方、娘を孕ませて一体どうしてくれるとなじる母親と、婚約指輪を手に悲嘆にくれる娘に対し、悪びれぬ態度で手切れ金を差し出している。娘の名はオックスフォードのサラ・ヤング。トムは遊学中にこの娘を誘惑したのであろう。室内には亡父の守銭奴ぶりを示すモティーフが充満している。トムの背後では悪徳弁護士がテーブルの上の金をくすねようとしている。（出典: 平成6年度新収作品 [配布資料]. 国立西洋美術館, 1995. より一部引用）
