クリシェ・ヴェール（ネガ・ガラスの意味。別名クリシェ・グラス、デッサン・エリオグラフィック、グラス・プリンツ、ガラス版画）とは、絵を描いたガラス板の下に印画紙を敷き、これに光を当てて作る一種の日光写真。1839年、フランスのルイ・ジャック・マンデ・ダゲールとイギリスのウィリアム・ヘンリー・フォックス・タルボットによってほとんど同時に発明され、1850、60年代には、フランス、イギリス、アメリカで大いに流行した。その工程は、まずガラス板の上に不透明な塗膜をひく。次に、黒く仕上げたい部分だけ先の尖った道具を使って塗膜を掻きおとし、透明なガラス板を露出させる。そして、この原板を印画紙に焼きつけて完成に至る。フランスでクリシェ・ヴェールを好んで用いたのは、コロー、ドービニー、コンスタン・デュテュルーら、印象派に先立つ風景画家たちである。コローはこの技法が生むソフトグラウンド・エッチングにも似た効果が自己の湿潤な大気表現に適していることを発見して、アラスの写真家アダルベール・キュヴリエらの協力を得て、1853年から1874年までの間に66点の作品を制作した。一方ドービニーは18点（あるいは17点）制作したが、それらはすべて、彼がバルビゾンを中心に活動した1862年の作である。このほかドラクロワ、ミレー、テオドール・ルソーもこの技法を試みたが、特に利点が見出せなかったのか、すぐに手を引いている。クリシェ・ヴェールが1850、60年代に流行したのは写真技術の発展と密接な関連をもつ。事実、この運動の中心的役割を果たしたのはキュヴリエのような写真家であった。しかし写真製版技術の発展は、その初歩的形態ともいえるクリシェ・ヴェールの衰退を招き、1870年代に入るとこの技法はほとんど顧みられなくなった。クリシェ・ヴェールが再評価されたのはシュールレアリスムが台頭した1930年代であり、クレー、エルンスト、ピカソ、ブラッサイらはまったく別の観点からこの技法に取り組んだ。この『40のクリシェ・グラス』は、この技法がすでに過去のものと見なされていた1921年に、モーリス・ル・ギャレックによってパリで出版された。彼はキュヴリエが所有していた36枚の原板を入手し、可能な限り当初と同じ材料と技法を用いて焼きつけを行った。ここに含まれているのは、コロー19点（紙数15）、ドービニー16点、ドラクロワ1点、ミレー、テオドール・ルソー各2点である。発行部数は限定150部（予約価格2000フラン、1921年11月30日以降は2500フラン）、および豪華版5部。当館のセットには118の番号がある。(出典: 平成5年度新収作品 [配布資料].
