ゴヤの4大版画集の中で、『戦争の惨禍』は『妄』と同じく作者の生前には発表されず、歿後35年を経て1863年に、サン・フェルナンド王立美術アカデミーから出版された。1セットは80枚。ゴヤは生前1セット82枚を予定していたが、末尾の2枚は銅版が入手できなかったため削除された。この版画集は、内容と制作時期の上で前後2つに大別される。第1部は、対仏独立戦争中（1808～14年）にフランス兵とスペイン人の間で、あるいは親仏派と反仏派のスペイン人同士の間で繰り広げられた虐殺、暴行、拷問など、ありとあらゆる残虐行為、ならびに、2万人の死者を出したといわれる1811～12年の飢餓の惨状を描いた本来の「戦争の惨禍」。そして第2部は、象徴や寓意を用いて戦後のフェルナンド7世による反動体制を批判した「強調されたカプリーチョス」と呼ばれるグループで、これは65番から80番、および第1番の扉絵など、計23枚からなる。制作時期は必ずしも明確ではない。年記を持つ版画が3枚あり、それがすべて1810年であること、そして「強調されたカプリーチョス」の中に1820年1月に起こった自由主義革命に対する期待を表明する版画が含まれており、また、この年にゴヤ自身が82枚からなる試し刷りの1セット（大英博物館蔵）を友人に送って見てもらっていることから、休止期間があったにせよ、およそ1810年から1820年までの約10年間に制作されたものと想像される。技法は主としてエッチングが用いられ、アクアティントによるハーフトーンは、ゴヤの他の版画集に見られるほど重要な役割は果たしていない。それに代わって用いられているのが、硝酸を直接銅版に塗る「ラヴィ」と呼ばれる方法であり、背景の雲や衣服の襞などにその特徴を見ることができる。『戦争の惨禍』はゴヤの生涯の中でも一つの大きな転換期を示す作品である。1808年5月2日のマドリードの民衆蜂起に始まった対仏独立戦争は、ゴヤの内面に深刻な危機を生み出した。以前は、たとえば版画集『ロス・カプリーチョス』にも見られるように、不合理なもの、闇の世界を垣間見てはいても、人間と社会を客観的に批判するだけの余裕をもっていた。しかし戦争の惨状は、批判の原点であるはずの理性への信頼を根底から揺るがした。この版画集はスペインの苦難の時代のドキュメントであると同時に、「人間の条件」とは何か、というゴヤの執拗な問いかけなのである。(出典: 平成5年度新収作品 [配布資料].
