スペインの対ナポレオン独立戦争（1808－14年）の後、ゴヤはそこで体験した失望と苦悩を癒すため、闘牛を主題とする版画集の制作に打ち込んだ。熱烈な闘牛ファンであった彼は、最初モラティン（父）の著書『スペインにおける闘牛の起源と発展……』（1777年）を図解するつもりであったが、途中で方針を変え、若いころに見た有名な闘牛士たちの思い出を交えながら、闘牛のさまざまな型をエッチングとアクアティントで刻み、1816年に、33枚のセットとして発売した。一瞬の静寂とそれに続く激しい動き、猛然と突進する牡牛とこれをさばく闘牛士の優雅な身のこなしなど、その卓越した描写力は他に例を見ない。（出典: 平成1・2年度新収作品 [配布資料]. 1991）
