作品解説
《ある生涯》 第3版1891年（初版1884年） 恋人に捨てられた女性が、娼婦に身を落とし、社会から疎外され、死にいたる生涯を描いた連作で、2枚の「序」を含んだ15葉からなる。イエス・キリストの登場する宗教的な場面をいくつか含み、物語を直接的に語るだけではなく、象徴的にもメッセージを伝える構成となっている。愛は裏切りに満ち、社会は公正ではなく、耐えることのみを求めるキリスト教も救いとはならず、最後にはただ無となるだけである、というニヒリスティックな調子が全体を貫いている。 第1葉 序I 大きな木（禁断の樹）の下に裸体のイヴが立ち、背景には湖と4羽のフラミンゴが描かれている。画面の下には、蛇がイヴを誘惑した際に語った言葉が『旧約聖書』の「創世記」から引用されている。「お前たちは決して死ぬことはない。そうではなく、お前たちの目が開けるのだ」。（出典: マックス・クリンガー版画展：《イヴと未来》《ある生涯》《ある愛》, 2005.
