《イヴと未来》第2版　1882年（初版1880年）旧約聖書に書かれたイヴの物語から3つの場面、「イヴの誕生」、「蛇に誘惑されるイヴ」、「楽園から追放されるアダムとイヴ」を取り上げて、それぞれに、未来のあり方を象徴的に表した3つの場面を組み合わせて構成されている。まず人類の「原罪」を表す場面があり、そのあとに未来が示されている。第6葉　第三の未来腰に砂時計を下げた骸骨は死神を表し、道路舗装用の道具でもって、画面の下に積み重ねられた人々の顔を打ち砕こうとしている。もうもうと立ち込める煙のうえには十字架がそびえ、画面の右側からは、死神の行為を止めようとしているかのように右手が差し出され、死神は視線をそちらに向けている。死を道路舗装工事人とする喩えは、作家ジャン・パウルの小説『へスペルス』から借りたものである。（出典: マックス・クリンガー版画展：《イヴと未来》《ある生涯》《ある愛》, 2005.
