この作品はレンブラントの真に最初のエッチングの大作であり、ドライポイントが初めて広範に応用されている例である。明暗の強いコントラストと、性格の異なる変化に富んだハッチングの効果的使用によって、豊かな絵画的魅力も具えている。レンブラントはこの構図の源泉を、アムステルダムのウーデ・チルクにある同じ主題のステンドグラス（ディルク・クラベートの素描に基づく）から得たのかもしれない。（出典: 昭和53年度新収作品 [配布資料]. [東京]: 国立西洋美術館,1978）
