ドイツ・ルネサンスを代表する画家・版画家デューラーの最後期の銅版画のひとつである。秀でた額が印象的なこの肖像のモデルは、フィリップ・メランヒトンで、この版画が制作されたとき数えで30歳である。わずか21歳にして大学の古典語教授に請われるほどの俊英で、ルターとも親密な交友があり、宗教改革を擁護した。ルターの宗教改革後プロテスタントを信奉するようになったニュルンベルク市は、メランヒトンを招請し、学校制度改編とギムナジウム創立の助言を仰いだ。ラテン語銘文には「デューラーはフィリップの特徴をあたかも生きているかのように描くことはできたが、熟練した腕も彼の精神を描写することはできなかった」とある。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

This is one of the last engravings made by Dürer, a leading painter and engraver of the German Renaissance. The model, whose prominent forehead is imposing, is Philip Melanchthon. Melanchthon was in his thirtieth year when this portrait was engraved. He was so talented that, already at age 21, he was invited to become a professor of Greek at the university. He was a close friend of Luther and supported the Reformation. Following Luther's Reformation, the city of Nuremberg became Protestant and invited Melanchthon to advise them on the reorganization of the educational system and the foundation of a gymnasium. The Latin inscription reads, "Although Dürer was able to vividly describe Philip's features, not even a skillful hand was capable of capturing his spirit." （Source: The Degital Gallery. 1999-2006）
