Immediately after World War II, a movement in abstract painting known as Art Informel emerged in Paris. Instead of clearly defined lines and forms, paint was applied in thick layers and scraped off as desired in order to express the uneasiness or impulses of the inner feelings of the human beings. In contrast, Buffet, who advocated figurative painting, expressed spiritual anguish and uneasiness by depicting thinly elongated figures in lines drawn with ripping intensity and limited, monotone colours. In this drawing, a back view of the thin figure characteristic of Buffet is drawn in sharp, rigid lines. The compact composition based on the vertical line of the door and the horizontal lines of the floor further emphasize the bleak impression of the overall image.
