イギリスを代表する風景画家ターナー。光と空気の滲むような戯れを描き、印象派の画家たちに大きな影響を与えた。彼は、油彩による大作を発表する一方、ヨーロッパ各地を旅行して、多数の風景スケッチを残している。本作の画面左下には、はっきりとは読み取れないものの地名の書込みがみられ、これにもとづいて、スイスのアーレ渓谷を描いたものである可能性が指摘されている。(出典: 風景―国立西洋美術館素描コレクションより, 2013. [展覧会作品解説パネル])
