18世紀後半のフランス美術を代表するフラゴナールの作品としては、当館はすでに≪若い熊使い≫と題する風俗画的主題による素描を所蔵している。今回購入した≪ドラリーチェ姫を連れ去る王子マンドリカルド≫は、フラゴナールのもう一つの側面である、文学的趣味と18世紀の宮廷文化の香りを馥郁と感じさせるもので、様式的にも、比較的よく描きこまれた≪若い熊使い≫に対して、大胆奔放な筆線の動きが素晴らしい。主題は、ルネッサンス期のイタリアの詩人アリオトスの長篇叙事詩『狂乱のオルランド』からの一場面である。フラゴナールは、18世紀後半にリバイバルしたこの詩をもとに、160枚を越える素描を描いているが、本作品もその一枚である。（出典: 平成1・2年度新収作品: 国立西洋美術館. 1991）
