19世紀末、ナビ派の中心人物として活動したドニは、キリスト教主題や、自分の家族をモデルにした日常の光景を多く描いた。油彩画では、実景に基づく風景にさえも、装飾性の強いものや象徴性を感じさせるものが多いが、本作は、見たままの眺めを即興的に写し取ったものであろう。ドニは、現在知られる限り、1915年以降、たびたびトノン（トノン・レ・バン）にほど近いジュネーヴに滞在している。本作もそうした機会に描かれたものと推測される。(出典: 風景―国立西洋美術館素描コレクションより, 2013. [展覧会作品解説パネル])
