イタリアの風俗を描いたこの作品は、1980年春に当館で開催された「フラゴナール展」に展示されたが、やはり同展に出品された油彩の風俗画《洗濯女》、《木の橋》、《かくれんぼ》などと共に、フラゴナールの第一次イタリア滞在（1756-61年）の際の見聞を示すものである。イタリア風俗を表わしたフラゴナールの油彩画、素描に関しては、イタリアで直接描かれたものか、それともその後に記憶やスケッチをもとにして描かれたものかという問題はあるが、本素描に限って言うならば、デニス・サットンの指摘するように、「現実の光景を前にイタリアで制作した習作ではなく、イタリアでフラゴナールの心に残った諸情景が反映された綺想曲とでも呼ぶべきもの」と考えるのが妥当であろう[フラゴナール展, 1980年, cat. no. 114]。いずれにせよ本素描は、自由で溌剌としたペンの運びと淡彩によって微笑ましい情景を描き出しており、素描家としてのフラゴナールの見事な腕と、彼の風俗画家としてのすぐれた一面を示している。なお、フラゴナールの庇護者アベ・ド・サン＝ノンが1762年に出版したエッチング集『グリフォン』の中の一葉の下絵として用いられていることから、制作の下限は1762年とすることができる。（出典: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2004. cat. no. 48）

Fragonard, who had studied under Boucher in Paris, spent time in Rome to study Italian works of art. In this sketch, he uses light colors and free, spontaneous movements of the pen to bring to life a joyous Italian scene. A book of etchings entitled "Griffin", published in 1762 by Fragonard's patron, the Abbé de Saint-Non, contains a leaf based on this rough sketch. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
