ロダンは、1906年の植民地博覧会の折にフランスを訪れたカンボジアの舞踏団の踊りを見て、その異国的な服装と動きにすっかり魅了され、何枚もの素描を残している。それが単なる異国趣味だったのか、ロダン芸術の本質から生まれた必然だったのかは決しがたいが、いずれにしても晩年のロダンが日本を含む極東に少なからぬ関心を寄せていたことは事実である。ロダンの晩年の素描には、軽やかな曲線で人体の動きそのものを紙面に定着したような表現がしばしば見出される。本作品にもそうした特色がはっきりと現れており、素早い線描と褐色淡彩の微妙な色調で、人体の一瞬の動きが巧みにとらえられている。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

In 1906, Rodin attended a performance given by a troupe of Cambodian dancers visiting France. He was absolutely enchanted by the exotic costumes and movement of these dancers and did numerous drawings of them. Although it is hard to determine whether it was merely a touch of exoticism or an inevitability deriving from the essence of Rodin's art, it is true that, Rodin held notable interest in the Far East including Japan. The drawings dating from his late years are often composed of facile curves, which seem to fix the bodily movement on the paper. Such a characteristic is evident in this picture, too. The hastily drawn lines and the subtle tonality of the pale brown wash skillfully capture the instantaneous movement of the body. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
