古典への回帰をはかっていたドニは、20世紀を迎える頃、次々と教会や公共建築物装飾の仕事を依頼され、多数の大型壁画を描く場を得た。1911年には、友人のトマが支配人をつとめるパリのシャンゼリゼ劇場の装飾のため建築家、彫刻家、画家を集めた大規模なプロジェクトに参加する。 ドニが担当した円天井の装飾は「音楽の歴史の総合」という中心テーマの下、「ギリシアの舞踏法」、「オペラ」、「交響曲」、「音楽劇」を主題とする4つの大きなフリーズとこれらをつなぐ「オーケストラ」、「コーラス」、「オルガン」、「ソナタ」を主題とする円形画面で構成された。本作品はこのうち「交響曲」のフリーズで画面中央に立つベートーヴェンの第九交響曲の擬人像の習作である。完成作では冠らしきものが加えられているが、両手を高々と掲げ、右足から前へ軽く踏み出している姿勢はそのまま生かされた。また本作品で彼女の隣に描きかけられた人物はベートーヴェン自身である。完成作では古代風の衣装をつけ、身体を右斜め後ろに引いて立ち、その交響曲を擬人化した女性の一団に囲まれている。彼らを中心に画面右手にはヘンデルの「メサイア」の擬人像、その後ろに古代の凱旋車に乗ったバッハが続き、左手には古代神の扮装でハイドンらの姿も描かれた。 天井画全体としては、音楽神アポロが中央に立つ「ギリシアの舞踏法」を起点に、右に向かうと「オペラ」、左に向かうと「交響曲」が位置し、さらにそれぞれがいずれもワーグナーの「パルシファル」が中央で聖杯を掲げる「音楽劇」へとたどり着くように配された。ドニの周囲には多数の音楽家や音楽愛好家たちが集っており、この図像プログラムにも、ワーグナー崇拝者の友人の作曲家ヴァンサン・ダンディの影響が指摘されている。一方、ドニがここで目指したのは難解な寓意画ではなく、明解な主題と構図の下、目と感情に直接語りかけるような「象徴」的表現を用いた絵画だった。4つの主要場面はそれぞれ画面下に主題理解を助ける銘文を加えつつ、海、山、森、庭園を背景に装飾的に画面が構成され、主題と風景の調和がはかられている。本習作の擬人像が統べる「交響曲」のための銘文は、「人類の心から、自然のあらゆる音から、神聖なる交響曲が湧き出でる」というものであった。（出典: 開館50周年記念 所蔵水彩・素描──松方コレクションとその後. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2010. cat. no. 28、一部文言修正）
