女性が髪をとかすしぐさは､最も日常的な行為である一方で､文学や美術の歴史では伝統的に様々な寓意や性的な意味合いを担ってきた｡ドガがこのテーマの持つ二つの側面を自らの作品にどの程度反映させているかは一概にはいえないが､いずれにせよ､この題材が晩年のドガを魅了したことは事実である｡ 1890年代のドガは素描､パステル､油彩､リトグラフ等､多様な技法と素材で髪をくしけずる女性を繰り返し扱った｡本作品では､晩年の特徴である太い線を随所に用いて､髪をとかす人物の一瞬の動きを描きとどめている｡木炭の柔らかなぼかしと赤茶のパステルによって､髪､肌の質感が巧みに描き分けられている｡（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

While a woman combing her hair is a most commonplace practice in everyday life, in the history of literature and art, it has traditionally borne a variety of allegorical and sexual connotations. In the 1890s, Degas repeatedly depicted this subject in all kinds of techniques and media. In this particular drawing, the artist makes frequent use of heavy lines to capture the momentary movement of the model combing her hair. By means of mellow gradation in charcoal and reddish brown pastel, the textures of her hair and skin are portrayed in an exquisite manner. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
