This is an example of a triptych: a work of art consisting of a central panel flanked by two movable panels. Set against a landscape that extends across all three panels, we have at the center a depiction of the Crucifixion. On the panels on either side, the donor couple is shown kneeling in prayer. The artist Joos van Cleve was active in Antwerp during the first half of the sixteenth century. The extensive panorama that incorporates such details as the oddly shaped rocks is characteristic of Flemish landscape painting of the time. (Source: Gallery label, July 2016)
