The French Impressionist painter Pissarro began creating works with Cézanne and Guillaumin in Pontoise after he returned from London in 1871. The scene shown in this work was found on the country road that ran along the train tracks near Pontoise. The Impressionists, including Pissarro, frequently painted snowscapes in their winter scenes, where the subject actually becomes the subtle play of light and shade. Here the harmonies of grays and browns allow the composition to convey the melancholy feel of a barren field seen in the thin light of winter. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
