Edmond-François Aman-Jean

Chevry-Cossigny, Seine-et-Marne, 1858 - Paris, 1936

Young Girl in the Garden

Date 1921
Materials and Techniques oil on canvas
Size(cm) 65 x 50
Inscriptions Signed upper left: Aman Jean
Credit Line Matsukata Collection
Standard ref. M6
Category Paintings
Collection Number P.1959-0003

All of Aman-Jean's images of women painted during his symbolist period were homogeneous in form and represented the "femme fatale" type of fin de siècle. This image of a young girl painted in gentle colors and brushstrokes, however, does not reflect this type. Instead it reveals the subject matter that Aman-Jean saw in his immediate surroundings during his later years, and exhibits his warm sensitivity to beautiful things.
