This drawing is based on an oil painting with the same title, which was painted circa 1901 and now belongs to The National Museum of Western Art. The drawing was executed as an illustration for the catalogue of a solo exhibition of works by Signac held at Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, Paris in 1906. Since 1892, Signac depicted this port over and over again. Unlike the oil version, which is done in elaborate pointillism, this drawing illustrates the subject in ink lines and chiaroscuro, demonstrating the artist's ability in drawing.
