Fan-shaped paintings became a popular format in the 1870s, thanks to the number of artists influenced by Japonism. Gauguin created over twenty of these paintings, skillfully reconstructing motifs that he had used in his earlier oil paintings. These images of the landscape of Martinique reveal the unique cheracteristics of Gaugnin's transition from the discreet Impressionist brush strokes to a flat contrast which emphasizes the decorative.
