Boucher, a Rococo artist, was not only a painter; he was also active as a decorative artist, creating architectural ornamentation, designs for Gobelins tapestries and the like. This work was probably a sketch for such a decoration. Boucher, who had received the patronage of Madame de Pompadour and was the chief painter for the imperial court, probably made this sketch of the youthful goddess Hété holding a small bottle and wine glass as a design for a garden sculpture or for a piece of Sèvres figurative porcelain.
