Frank Brangwyn is a British artist of the fin de siecle who bears unforgettable significance on the Matsukata Collection. While travelling Europe and America, Kojiro Matsukata probably met Brangwyn through Tomoji Okada, the manager of the London Branch of Yamanaka Shokai. Brangwyn was later to become a close advisor to Matsukata in purchasing art. Matsukata, in turn, became the most reliable patron of Brangwyn. Although the idea was never realized in the end, there was even a plan to transfer this artist's studio to Japan in order to introduce Western art to the Japanese people. Done at one stretch in charcoal and pastel, the strong, bold touch of this drawing superbly captures the trust and friendship between these two men. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
