ファウナとは、ローマ神話に登場する牧畜の保護神ファウヌスの女性形である。本作品は、同一の彫像を三つ組み合わせて構成されている。ロダンはこうした試みをしばしば行った。三体の《アダム》像を結合した《３つの影》（《地獄の門》最上部）、同一の右手を二つ組み合わせた《カテドラル》などはその代表的な作例である。また、同一の人体デッサンを自在に組み合わせた素描も多数残っている。こうした群像は巧みに構成され、全体として一つのフォルムを呈しているので、見るものはそれが同じ像の反復であることに気づかないことが多い。本作品のもととなった小像の一体は、《地獄の門》の左柱の内側にも置かれている。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

The faunness is the female version of Faunus, the patron god of cattle-breeding in Roman mythology. This bronze is composed of three identical statues. Rodin often made such attempts. To give some representative examples, Three Shadows (at the top of The Gates of Hell) consists of three statues of Adam and Cathedral is a combination of two identical right hands. There are also numerous drawings in which sketches of a single figure are combined at will. Such groups are skillfully structured to present a single form as a whole so that, in many cases, the viewer does not realize that it is composed of a repetition of the same statue. The original figure, on which this group is based, appears on the inside of the left column of The Gates of Hell. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)

Bought from Musée Rodin, Paris by Kojiro Matsukata, Kobe through Kōzaburō Hioki, 26 September 1939, as ‘3 Faunesses’ (Fr. 5,000) [see accounting record dated 12 January 1939, in Archives of Musée Rodin, Paris; copy in NMWA curatorial files]; sequestered by French government, 1944; vested in French government under San Francisco Peace Treaty, 1952; transferred from French to Japanese government, 23 January 1959; entered into NMWA, April 1959.
