ロダンは若い頃より、18世紀ロココのプットーをも想起させる子供の像をしばしば取り上げているが、それは世紀末的ペシミズムに深く浸っていたこの彫刻家の別の側面、生に対する肯定的な側面を窺わせる。この作品では、二人の幼児が、螺旋状にからみ合う構成をとり、光の変化にしたがって、明暗の微妙で複雑な効果を示している。そしてこの柔らかなニュアンスが、子供の愛らしさの本質的な表現と結びつく。この作品は最初ブロンズで作られ、1883年にロンドンのダッドレイ・ギャラリーに出陳された。（出典: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2006. cat. no. 128）

Rodin created several works in his early years which recall the putti of the 18th century Rococo, and in these works we find the admiration to life from a sculptor steeped in fin-de-siècle pessimism. The two children in this work are composed in a spiraling form, and the changing light around them reveals the complex subtleties of light and dark. These nuances are then linked with the physical expression of the children's love. This work was first created in bronze, and displayed in the Dudley Gallery, London, in 1883.
